Tips for a noob of DoTA?

Posted: Tue Aug 05, 2008 10:14 am

So I just began playing dota last weekend with my friends in an internet cafe, and I kinda sucked, I think I was using Terrorblade...

So question: What are some good tips for DoTA? Like how to level fast like my friends

and what are good Heroes to use and master so I can practice with AI for a while Very Happy

play with sniper, razor, and rikimaru.
tell people on your team that you are just a beginner and ask them to keep an eye on you and give you advise.
read strategies here available for heroes you like
watch replays, see the replays with largest number of downloads and positive comments from other users.
read forum discussions for the heroes you want to know about and item builds that might be good.
Enjoy and welcome to DS Wink

Reading the strategies on this site is a very good approach. Try and find a hero that you would like to play. eg: - Atropos, the bane elemental. Read the guide on that hero and try him/her out. It may not go well at first, but if you ask for help from more experienced friends, it will make it easier. IMO, rather than mastering so called noob heroes, using (and perhaps mastering) heroes that you enjoy makes the game a lot more satisfying.
You also ask how to level at the same speed as your friends, the key to this is staying near your allied creeps, but at the same time near enough to the enemy creeps as to gain experience when each one dies. From here you can slowly pick up new techniques such as creep blocking and denying, which are explained in lots of detail within these forums.

Overall, the key is to start slowly, as you mentioned, practice with AI and learn the ropes. I would recommend the venomancer as a starting point, he is effective throughout the game and is not a significant challenge. If you prefer melee, try balanar, the nightstalker.

just practice.. practice and practice....... the more u play, the less u suck..
but, for me, the first thing u should learn is last hitting and denying creep...
and always take a peek at the minimap.. wacth out for missing enemy.. they might want to gank u...
hope thats help..

dont think sniper is appropriate. you will surely end up feeding. (a lot more than other heroes)

In my opinion, you learn best if you're just playing. Join "-arem for noobs"-games and ask your team mates for help with item builds etc. Watching replays is srsly boring.

Playing apem with easy heroes is, as people are saying, an option. Personly I think it's better to go diffrent heroes, since you have to know how all heroes works, mostly cuz' you have to know your enemy. Also, playing easy heroes only ain't funny.

And remember: failure is good. You learn alot from losing, so if you die, try to do better next time, and never leave games.

Btw, if you are nordic, don't join nordic noob games early on. The nordic noobs are very often not noob at all. Good luck!

You should learn every heroes skills.. You dont have to master them but you should atleast know their abilities couse you will be facing with them. Play with Aı maps and try to learn all the items, run around the map, discover the places that you can hide, escape chase.. There are some great guides about general map infos, items and certain heros, read them, ask questions if you have in mind and use the search tool
