Here are some tips:

1.Learn to last hit.
2.Buy only the needed items, dont waste gold.
3.Try NOT to die.
4.Try to balance farming and killing.
5.If you dont know how to play a hero, read a strategy!

Thats general..

I recommend to play Razor. His lightning hurts quite bad and just have to buy AGI and abit of HP items and then u can pwn. Oh.. and remember the skill build too.

dont be too aggresive if you use long-ranged heroes
stay focus on you build and...
dont let your allies down

first off, try using a easy hero like sniper. as you get better, progress towards other heroes like terrorblade and stuff. watching replays are a good way to learn. also, study the map carefully to understand how to play better.

Use mosly ranged heroes with decent hp.
Stay in your lane for as long as possible. In the beginning exp is more important than money so if you are having trouble in your lane just stay maybe 2/3 from the battle and you should get the exp anyway.
If you are dying a lot, swallow your pride with buying expensive items. Its alot better to have a few bracers for survavility than never getting your butterfly. You might get it later anyway.
If you are having trouble in your lane keep close to your tower or ask for assistance.
Try not to buy items which has a "skill" and try not to use heroes that has many active skills. Youll always end up using just one of them all the time. Excape skills like blink or windwalk helps a lot.
If you are pushing alone beyond the river before the 15 minute mark you are pushing too far.
If you dont know what to do in a battle follow a more experienced player and do whatever he does. Keep an eye on your life bar. When its getting around the low yellow you whould consider going back. Of course that depends on the situation.

Hope this helps you out.

Have fun and Dont Give up!

ive only been playing dota for a few months so im no pro but man i still feed when i go drow and hes about the only one i cant use to an okay level now (bar pudge and meepo maybe). drow always just seems to get targeted and has so little damage at the beginning that i cant last hit or deny. first heroes i learnt how to use and would suggest to any noob would be first and foremost skeleton king then naix. both with high hp pools and lifesteal with the added bonus of sk's reincarnate. basically for the noobs that takes away probably half your deaths if your smart about your mana. When i first started i found ranged heroes the hardest as id push too far (being a noob) and get killed so easily whereas with str heroes you have a little more leway.

Other heroes id suggest when u improve a bit would be dwarven sniper as u can harrass and kill with ulti, phantom lancer becuase of doppelwalk and images making him harder to kill and then maybe zeus and hes fairly straight forward

well, you should practice with AI maps first, as long as you want to play against your friends, first try to master a hero, a ranged one farming are easier with'em, next, practice commands, explore the map, learn about farming (denying, last hitting, THERE ARE EXCELENT GUIDES ABOUT THAT IN GARENA FORMUS www.garena.com) and practice a lot, memorize item recipes with practice, and play play play... that's so, I think! Very Happy
