General Questions:
[gq01] What's a replay file?
A replay file is a. Replay! Warcraft replays have the file extention of .w3g, it basically records and saves the commands of each players. That's pretty much what's a replay is. So when you play a replay, Warcraft is actually playing a game again, but this time everything is scripted accordingly to what has happened in the real game.
Remember that Warcraft is 'replaying' the game again. This means you should have the same Warcraft Version, and the same map/version. More below if you need halp.
And so - remember that these are set of commands. No. You can't open replays with something silly like Media Player or something
[gq02] How do I save replays?
Two ways. The most straight forward way is when you finish a game. Quit the game, then a 'summary' screen shows up. Now don't click Ok! Click the button beside it, 'Save Replay', then write whatever name you want.
The other way is indirect, but reliable if you forgot to save the game. To simply put it, if you have just finished a game but forgot to save it, do not fret! Warcraft automatically saves the last replay, just get the 'LastReplay.w3g' on your replay folder! BUT, remember - make sure you haven't played any games in Warcraft since then, or else it will be a replay of that instead.
[gq03] How do I open replays?
Opening a replay is two-fold, depending on you if you have a;
a) Legal Install of Warcraft III
Meaning, you actually ran the installer for warcraft.
This is very easy - once you have the .w3g file, just click it. The installed should've made it that .w3g are known by your computer and will automatically load! But if you like, you could also do what b) users do.
b) Uh. Something else than legal installation.
Something like copy paste, or the likes.
You can play replays by moving the .w3g replay files you want to watch in the replay directory in the Warcraft folder. (ie, C:\Games\Warcraft III\replays\) After you've placed them there, run Warcraft, click Single Player then Load Replay. Find the replay in the list and grab a popcorn or something!
And again, no. You can't use Media Player!
Troubleshooting:
[ts01] "The map file associated with the replay could not be found.
FAIL. In the pic above is one example. What's the problem? Simply, Warcraft can't find the map. Unfortunately, Warcraft only searches the SAME directory, with the SAME filename as it was saved. This means that in order to watch the replays, you must put the map on the same folder where the replay saver placed it. Normally, custom maps should be placed in Maps\Downloads\ directory.
In the example above, my friend is silly. He saved it in Maps\Downloaded\ directory. Notice! Different directory!
Also make sure that the filename doesn't have _s. Like, DotA_Allstars_8.292F.w3x is different from Dota Allstars 8.292F.w3x. Normally, maps uses the space rather than _s.
[ts02] "This replay data is for a different version of Warcraft III.
Uh. Maybe read it and you'll understand... Well yeah, you don't have the right Warcraft Version! Replays nowadays are either saved in v1.20 or v1.21. And no, you obviously can't watch a 1.20 replay in 1.21. Go to [misc1] for the version changer!
There's no way to tell what versions the replay are - except when you open it on the replay folder in Warcraft. As you can see above, the Mirana Lol replay is incompatible with the current version - beside it is what the version it needs.
1.20 is usually on replays saved by GGC (or GArena, whatever) by Filipinos, or unupdated people. However, if you're viewing league games and stuff - they play on the latest version so use 1.21!
Moreso, 1.20 is the same as 1.20a/b/c/d/e or whatever letter you want to put, don't worry they'll play fine. On the otherhand, 1.21 can read the latest Warcraft version (1.21b or 1.22, can't recall).
Other Questions:
[oq01] How do I rewind a replay?
You can't. See [gq01] for explanation, [misc2] for a program to sort of rewind it.
Miscellaneous
[misc1] WC3 1.20/1.21 .dlls (Version Changer)
There are a couple of programs out the that makes it play a different version and stuff. But it's all complicated! So just do what I do.
First off, get this . Extract that and you get two folders with the names of the patch version. Now how do this works? Simply copy the files from folders, then paste them directly in the Warcraft folder. So if I wanted to watch 1.20e replays, I'd copy the files from the 1.20e folder and paste them in the Warcraft III folder. If it asks you to overwrite, go ahead. You'd maybe want to save a back up of the original files though.
So yeah. Afterwards, open your Warcraft, and the version number there is depending on the files you've copied! And yes, you can watch 1.20e replays now if you've patched the newest versions. Also note, Warcraft really recognizes that you've changed versions. This way you can play 1.20e in GG Clients (since most pinoys didn't even bother to update <.<), and use 1.21 when playing on Bnet! Yay!
[misc2] ReplaySeeker
ReplaySeeker is a handy program that lets you jump to any time in the game. Well, not instant, it actually just plays it again, but the neat about this is that it can go up to 16x speed, and you can do something else while it loads!
Check the thread in DA for latest and stuff.
http://forums.dota-allstars.com/index.php?showtopic=196471
[extra] Simple Camera
Want to watch your game in another view? ReplaySeeker has an awesome plugin - Simple Camera - that lets you view the game in any way you want! It has been used in numerous DotA Movies (check DA's media section), so you can use it too! Cons: Might be laggy if your PC is that old
http://forums.dota-allstars.com/index.php?showtopic=217814
[misc3] DotAHit
DotAHit has a feature called 'ReplayParser'. It makes information based on the game, including Lineups, Laning, players' kill/death ratio, creepstats, APM and more!
...but I'm lazy. Google it! Or search it at DA.
Hookaay. Ask questions here if you still have problems and need halp.

I can't play the replay since it's in different version.
There's a couple of programs out the that makes it play a different version and stuff. But it's all complicated! So just do what I do. It works for 1.20 and 1.21 only though.
First off, get this . Extract that and you get two folders with the names of the patch version. Now how do this works? Make sure you're using the latest patch, 1.21, before proceeding. Well, that's because I don't know what'll happen if you did this in other version :P
So anyway, simply copy the files from folders, then paste them directly in the Warcraft folder. So if I wanted to watch 1.20e replays, I'd copy the files from the 1.20e folder and paste them in the Warcraft III folder. If it asks you to overwrite, go ahead. Yay!
Warcraft complains that I don't have the map.
First. Ofcourse check if you have the map =P. Next would be placing it in the right directory. When Warcraft complains, it will right down on which specific folder it is searching for the map. You have to put it on the right folder, with the right name to work. Normally, all maps are saved on the Downloads folder, and make sure that the filename doesn't have _s. Like, DotA_Allstars_8.292F.w3x is different from Dota Allstars 8.292F.w3x. Normally, maps uses the space rather than _s. So yeah.
How do I rewind it? How do I watch a certain time in the replay?
Simple answer: you can't.
Long Answer: The replay files you've saved is more of a save of commands each user inputted. When you play a replay, Warcraft is doing the commands each player in the game did, so it's like playing the game all over again! Since it's playing a game, you can't actually rewind it, or jump at a certain scene, can you? So yeah.
Ask moar help here!
Mods: suggest to pin and perhaps upload the files that changes the version in your server or something? =P[/old]

I can't go back in replays,is there a way to do it?I am serious

Nope. The only way to view something that has passed is to rewatch the whole replay. The replays are actually sort of saved commands of the game. So it's like playing the game all over again, but this time with all the actions the users inputted. Okay I talk weird. =P
I'll go add that question~

Well, it's re play . It plays again. :P You can always rewatch the replay at 8x speed until you get to the part you want to watch *and didn't noticed and stopped too late and you have to try again XP*

For some reason, ChaosAngel can't use the Version Changer thingy. Anyone else experience the same thing? Also, would providing screenshots for it better?
