Question - how does Vanguard stack? Do you get two 65% chances to block 35 damage (meaning you can block 70 damage sometimes)? Or do you have an additional 65% chance to block if the first 65% chance failed (65% chance to block the 35% of the time it doesn't block the first time)?

I think it's the 2nd one.

cheap and good.. especially for agi heroes who have low HP. more cost effective than buying strength items. the 65% to block 35 damage also translates into about a 20% increase in HP.

^not good for pudge in late game. PT, 2HoT, radiance and buriza. u can switch it so pudge can life steal so he doesnt lose so much health when he rots

hey... did u know with a vanguard... even bone at lvl 15 can 1 v 1 tower with just power threads... the most is take 100 dmg... therefore... i've decided that this is the perfect item for bone low life...

oh... and if it stacks like the second one... i think its 87.75 to avoid 35 dmg

its like a baby tarasque... its just great at early - mid game beacuse heroes has low damage and creeps too.. it can block most of its damage..

good for dragon knignt because of the dragon blood and its armor plus the bloking percent of the vanguard is equal to "VERY LOW DAMAGE"

i use this item in my every game .. it is really useful ... at level 10 when the creep attacked u .. its like no damage ...

u can use this item when you try to kill a hero alone and your opponent have like 5-10 creep aroud you dont wory u can kill the hero and the creep as well.. but always be wary..

does vanguard block the damage per second on rot for pudge? meaning for every tick you get damaged with rot vanguard has a 65 percent chance to block 35 from every tick?

nope, it blocks physical damage, rot is a skill damage.

damage over time usually cant be blocked anyway

i dont really like this item. it just delays your much needed items. also i think 2 bracers are enough to boost your hp early game

What if you have 1 heart and 1 vanguard, does that mean you have a total hp regen of 15hp/sec? Does the regen stock with other regen items?

please tell me if 2 vanguards does not stack..i hope they stack well.others say 2 vanguards does not stack..

well they sorta stack. the hp regen stacks and the 65% stacks kinda. u have 2 chances of 65% blocking but its not 130% lol

How about Vanguard on the sniper, i mean he has a long range-range heroes shouldn't touch him-and having this may help him live longer if a melee hero surprizes him??

Very useful in early and mid game but lost its effectivnes in late game.

2 vanguards are better than a HoT if your an agi hero in midgame... cheaper easy to build...

Ok.Vanguard is a must have item for Magina IMO.If you build him Sange you won't be able to mana-burn.So different heroes-different items...

the Vanguard is ideal for Axe because Axe needs to attack enemy heroes with heaps of enemy creeps so the vanguard helps him survive a lot more.

the vanguard is free, you get it automatically after you pay 1100 for the vitality booster, 875 for the RoH, and 300 for the stout shield which = 2275.
3 vanguards costs 6825

its also ideal to get axe blademails if u r versing melees.

i rather get this than the long preseverance combo for most heroes and im just saying not a noob if you got a vanguard for bane or artropos with his first skill of 80 attack disable woudnt be cool since even late game you can block attacks

Surely then Vanguard would be good in a situation where you can pump your Armour so high that the damage received is low enough for the vanguard to fully block normal heroes attack damage at level 25?
ie. Armour levels at 75% reduction, decreasing a heros attack @ 150 to 37.5 damage per, and thus having the chance of blocking most of the damage?

so... I'll explain it

The Vanguard Give 60% to block 35 damage... so exist the possibility taht 2 Vangaurs Trigger at the same time giving 70 damage block! the chances are => 60% x 60% = 3600/100 => 36% that it will block 70 damage.
But exist a 40% that nothing happen
so with 2 vanguard => 40 x 40 = 1600/100 => 16%

But also there is a chance that one Vanguard Block... and the Other not
so.... 60 x 40 = 2400/100 => 24%
but there are two vangaurds... so this chance must be duplicated
24 x 2 = 48%

Conclusion:
2 Vanguards Gives:

48% chance to block 35 damage
36% chance to block 70 damage
16% chance to does nothing

48 + 36 + 16 = 100%

42,25% chance to block 70 damage

45,5 + 42,25 + 12,25 = 100%

You can't block 70 damage with 2 vanguards, the best you can do is 35 damage but raise the chance.

1 Vanguard: 65% chance to block 35 damage
2 Vanguards: (1.0 - (0.35)*(0.35)) => 87.75% chance to block 35 damage.

the chance to block is increased, not the damage. say u hav 2 vanguards, if u block 35 of the first attack, the other vanguard does nothin. this applies to Kraken Shell/Armour on Leviathan.

I believe how vangard function exsits in probibilty.
There are 3 cases to consider:

1.) ATLEAST one of the shield is actiaved blocking 1 or 2 of the 35 dmg.
In this case calculating the probibilty of atleast one shield blocking a dmg would simply be to subtract 100% by 65% leaving 35%. THe 35% is the dmg that the first shield cannot block.Out of the 35% anther dmg another chance of a shield blocking is 35% time the probilty of the second which is 0.65. giving a total chance of 87.8 % for Alteast one shield blocking. this includes have both occuring at the same time as well.

2.) BOTH shield is activated blocking 70 dmg
In this case calculating the probibilty of both shields activating blocking 70 dmg is simply muiltipy the probibilty both shields. 0.65 times 0.65 giving a total of 42.25 % of both shield occuring.

3.) NONE of the shield is actiacted, recieveing complete dmg
In this case calculating the probibilty of none of the shields activating. This can be done easily by taking the probilty of ATLEAST one shield working(87.8%) and subracting it from 100% giving a total of 12.2% chance that the shield will not work. Anther method is to take both probility of shields not occuring and muiltipying them 0.35 time 0.35 this gives the same resule 12.2%

i think each attack you take has a 65% of blocking 35dmg. if u have one u obviously get just 65%. if you have two then you have 65% per shield do block still only 35dmg. what i amtrynig to say is that it is not 65%+(65%of65%).

i feel that its a great item for sylla's bear isnce he is the one in there taking the taking give him yet again an easier way of harassing heros and not having to worry about getting hurt by creeps, i recommend farming this item immediately so that sylla can work on shutting heros down early

The blocked damage was increased to 40%. Chance of blocking and everything else remains the same.

I use prefer to use vanguard in early and mid game and if you are a str. type hero get a HoT in late game

What works first: damage reduced by x%(hero armor) or reduced damage by 40 (Vanguard)?

I think that this item should be expanded into a new item: BKB and Vanguard together. It would be great for intel heroes late game like pugna or CM or enigma when using channeling ultimates. They should have then the percentage chance to block dmg and bash/ministun attacks when activated and immunity to spells for a certain amount of time because permabash heroes tend to be imba later and intel heroes need some counter against late game troll/void/sb which are guaranteed enemies in apem's.

is vanguard up a bit on version 6.51 of DotA?

actually in the new version all in know is that it blocks 40 dmg. The chance is either 60 or 65 last time i played. Why haven't tey updated this yet????

SOme ppl say this doesn't stack with Tidehunter because of his kraken shell. Lv 4 block 28 dmg each attack.
Plus a chance to block 40 which means each attack he could block up to 68 dmg.

vanguard is the second on my list after buyin 3 stout's sheilds for Axe .. its really syko .. smtimes i stack it with blaid mail i think for axe he will be feelingless .. blaid mail good if u r facing a melee return 20% of his damage back on him .. that what i think and understand .. im a noob ..

Early game, better to start with Vanguard due to its regen and hp-increasing capabilities. You wouldn't need lifesteal until later on when you have decent damage.
