dont u think turning root on before hooking is actually better than turning it on after?
happened many times to me... I hook some1 and bcuz of the delay hook has, enemy hero got away...if I had root on Im sure this wouldnt happened(20% slow)
even if u turn on rot and miss the hooking ull get ur lost hp back really fast-its pudge's speciality :)

Instead of flaming the maker of the guide, just look on his effort of spending extra time doing screenshots and timing them just to satisfy those beginners in dota. In making strategy, you need to dedicate your guide to newbies not pros. You need to use simple and clear words or sentences. And this strategy mainly focuses on hot spots where you can position the hooking and not on the item builds coz each and everyone of us has our own builds. Thus, to all flamers, make your own guide first before cursing other's guide. Peace!!!

Very good guide, just one question though. Shouldn't you farm for a hood of defiance first, before getting flesh heap? That makes you 46 % resistant to magic, which means rot does a lot less damage to you, as well as making spells against you mostly pointless. Otherwise, exact same as my pudge build, well done 9/10

Yeah right!! I always build Hood of Def for pudge. To reduce hurts from rot and very nice hp regen. It stacks with flesh heap as well. I'm beginning to master the timing of hooking moving enemy as well as saving ally hero by hooking them hehehe.. Tnx for the idea of saving your ally coz I've never done that before when I random picked pudge.

Well, you definitely explained thoroughly how to use hook, but i believe you could use a Hood of Defiance in there.....
Also, for Pudge counters, Omniknight has repel to counter you, so you can't use your combo, N'aix has Rage which makes him untargetable, so once again you are useless, Magina can take your whole combo and stay with 3/4 hp (seen it and tested it). The new hero, Storm Spirit can also absorb 600 damage from your combo....
So there are many counters for pudge, because he relies on his skills to kill....So Magic Resistance = a dead pudge (most likely at least)
But overall you really showed how to become a nice killer....

A must item for pudge is radiance and hood of defiance. You can even make 2 hoods for the rot not to hurt you coz your damage relies on rot mostly. With radiance, rot obviously hurts your enemy almost twice. Someone suggests to use refresher. Have you guys tried refresher orb on pudge? I haven't coz for me it's a waste of inventory space. I guess that will be okay in 1 on 1 or 2on2. If you have radiance and hood, instant kill with refresher, 6 seconds without moving because of dismember plus rot and radiance. Ouch!!!

there is no person with one ounce of intelligence that would get a Refresher Orb with Pudge, that is a HUGE waste of money, and you could buy a Heart for less than that, which is a key hero for Pudge.

Any late-game permabasher or DPS hero or similar is an easy counter for Pudge, as well as Windwalkers and Blinkers etc; and Omniknight has a better slow than you so he can escape while you own your hp; other silencers - Drow, Death Prophet. Other than little things like that, nothing wrong with this.
Pretty good, from the little I know about Pudge. Well. I know a lot but I'm lousy. I think this is a 10/10 guide. It has screenies! There. Perfect excuse to give a 10/10 without reading the guide! Oh, but I already read it. Baaa. 10/10 anyway.

Its pretty hard to hook and dismember Mirana, thats why you have to do it unexpectedly or at a closer range.

HOD is good for pudge, i forgot to add that in. If youre gonna get it, get it before you put stats into flesh heap so you end up with 46% like LithiumPicnic

I agree, omniknight can be annoying cause of his repel, and when he doesnt have it on his aura thing (28% slow) makes you slower than him when you're chasing him.
For Naix and Storm Spirit, just wait 20seconds and then do the combo.
Yeah... Magina can be annoying 80% reduction from hook and 20damage per second from rot. If you're versing Magina 1v1 get items like....butterfly...Mask Of Madness...Monkey King bar....then laugh at him when he gets hood of difiance

Bottle is a very good alternative to arcane so long as your're not playing np but arcane works fine I think you should put more emphasis on it rather than have a few sentences. Overall I find nothing objectionable in your guide except maybe the dagon but still good guide.

PS Rot chasing is as important as hooking and should be explain just as well.

He has been my favourite hero of all time. The idea about HoD and AR is good, I'll sure try them out. Good hooking pictures about more places to ambush as well. Never thought about being immune to magic to cancel the self effect of Rot beore. Great strats 10/10

Its an excelent guide, but a player who is compitent with weaver can rock pudge, and there is really nothing pudge can do about it. Weavers skills almost totally counter pudge.

butcher can be countered by few heroes, and my best way to counter pudge is using Lucifer's ultimate while pudge is with rot activated

and IMO the best partner to him is the omniknight... rot + repel seems to be great! (i've never tried) :O

I usually take Bkb on Pudge in team games if Omni isnt present.

In general get BKB on Pudge if you are really getting nuked i usually farm Bkb on lvl 12 after arcane then taraqsque on 17 and then BOT on 19 and finish radiance.......

10 seconds of free rot.....hmm think of that-Again buy Bkb if Omniknight isnt present ok no use buying BKB if Omni is there......

nice, i might switch to butcher now. i used to play him and i thought he sucked. rot drainds to much and hook is hard to use. dismember doesnt have range, and you shouldnt get heap early game. he might be ok now i guess

very nice guide, although i have some comments.
Firstly, Arcane Ring costs 1700, but a Bottle costs 700. The extra 1000 can be used to make 2 bracers, which give you HP (More Rot), Agillity(Hopefully increase your sad attack speed)and MP (To pull off your combo successfull without running out of mana halfway through).
Also, i will reccomend you add in a Hood of Defiance, seeing that you take less damage from rot, vanguard may also be a good option.

Yeah bottles better than arcane ring only if you can hook. If you miss hooking an enemy 3 times, you'll end up with an empty bottle. So for new people using pudge its better to use arcane ring since you wont run out of mana

Pudge being the center of attention....Pudge is too tanky to be the first to be killed. But anyway BKBs a good item for pudge only if there are nukers on the other team (zeus, lina)....Might include BKB in the next update.

I totaly not agree on ur starting items, the abilitys u are starting with neither that u should solo as pudge. 1. Pick ROT, teaming with Rot will give ur or the other hero FB (if u are good) 2. u should start with RoG(maybe 2) or Gauntlets, then Bottle from Sectred shop. 3. u should get Hood of Defiance before u reach lvl 9, cuz if u pick Flesh heap before u have HoD the magic reduction wont stack, the rest is good, same spots as i use my self when i play pudge. If you are good enough with pudge no one will counter you, you can kill avernus really easy, just save your dismember for when he turns on borrowed time. And a good Pudge will kill omni before he can turn on repel. Anyway i might try that build...i already know battlefury and radiance are for flesh heap..but whats with the guinsoo?

I agree with your item build, but Pudge has to solo early game, he camps in the trees too much which will mean you'll hit the lvl gap pretty fast.

My personal opinion is that Pudge can get ANY of the item builds mentioned by everyone. There is no 'sucky' build for Pudge besides, say, Agility items. The thing is, playing Pudge is more about the skill of the player. I could play Pudge with 2 Hearts by lvl16 and not be as good as the guy who gets one Heart and two Bracers by lvl20 simply because that guy is BETTER. End of story - Pudge is about skills, not items.

no one counter pudge.... ive heard of one hes exsposed to be undefeatable if used right.... the omniknight. gl with the rot my aura slows u down more than ur rot does me my repel makes me take no damgae from rot while you have fun with that. my gaurdian angel makes me invunerable from any kind of damage and my heal makes you take damage and me regain.

sorry for double post just would like to ask something. wouldnt a black king bar immune pudge from taking any damage at all from rot and also make it so that doom bringer wouldnt do anything along with any other hero.

Doom bringer is a lot more dangerous than you think. Dooming you during rot will kill you very quickly, he can tank a lot of damage from rot and scorched earth will help him outrun you altogether.
Also Storm spirit with spell damage block and lightning grapple can run from you.
Omniknight will repel your rot and outrun you with degen aura, he can save his allies' by simply running beside them during their retreat.
Naix will block your rot and eat back the damage he takes, who's fresh meat now?
Darkterror can timewalk away, chronosphere you to keep you rotting yourself(and stop your hook if he's desperate) and can also lifesteal you with mask of madness.
I disagree with the part of pudge having no counters, but its a good guide that deserves 10/10

yesterday me and my friends had a game of course they wanted me to play with my other friend Julius.....he is kinda noobish really noobish before we played outside i let him practice his fave hero..."Razor"

Well Of course i was adept at hooking i never missed a target.....

Firstblood was kardel......Easy target didnt even nedd razors help

Until Enchantress i hooked her...Dismember and razor attacks....heals........?? then we are screwed....


When kardel got skadi we already lost


Enchantress was really a problem...what use is PERFECT HOOKING if....i cant take down my enemy i was 10-5that time i only gotten killing spree......

uhh...entrantress, never had a problem with her before. Just dismember before she heals or follow until it runs out then repeat the combo.

Hey nice guide. But i would rather you take out arcane ring and instead put in a persevearance as it regens both mana and hp instead of just mana. Try and get it by lvl 6 and you can start changing lanes and killing heroes without even worrying about your low health or mana with perser.

I am a fan of pudge and i just love using him because of his skills. It makes the game more fun.
My item build for pudge would be
1.BoT
2.Vanguard
3.Perser
4.HoT
5.HoT
6.HoD

If you do not have enough funds for 2 hearts then i suggest you go for 2 vanguards.And nice pics and a very good and brief explaination on how to hook!10/10.

well im generally good in hooking, so i prefer a bottle. plus, you can store runes with it, and refill it to a 2/3 bottle. very useful. Arcane ring only gives mp, while bottle gives like 200 hp, which is a lot in early game.

secondly, bloo, i think bkb is a good option, but get it after hood of defiance. and for those who cannot farm a hood of defiance in time before lvl 10, 1 note. SAVE the stat points and when u farm enough for a HoD, then u add in the stats to flesh heap.

i've seen a lot people use pudge, like in GG gaming. There are spots that you didn't add..... are there any spots from all lane that id more likely to hook? just asking... and also i would add heroes for Pudge Tag team are..Terror Blade and yurnero.. Try it you will see what im talking..

i say this is the best guide for pudge yet 12/10.

i think u need hp regeneration item at the beginning of the game. since we will use root a lot, so hp regeneration is necessary.

If You're on ADIK MODE, Use:

love this strategy. its detailed and well illustrated, not to mention the fact that the actual startegy is terific. i've read it about 2or3 times and it impresses me every time. the build is very flexible. there are a few HP regen items witch are optional, like the hood of defiance. wat i do is first get perseverence and if i feel i am getting hurt to much i deconstruct perseverence and get hood of defiance and you're just about set. afterwards you should get HoT's (2x) and then radiance. the full build should be something like this.
1.2x HoT
2.Hood of Defiance
3.boots of travel
4.2x Bracers

But however, omniknight is pudges worst nightmare, nothing will work on him with repeal. And pudge wont be abe to run away, while his aura will slow you down. Otherwise, as I said, excellent job

Its easy to kill omniknight from lv 1-9 cause most omniknights get
1:Heal thingy
2:Degen aura
3:Heal thingy
4:Degen aura
5:Heal thingy
6:Guardian angel
7:Heal thingy
8:Degen aura
9:Degen aura
and degen aura only slows for 7% at lv 1
and rot at lv 1 slows for 20%

IMO its a pretty average guide. You dont really justify your item build (as in why some items are better than others eg heart over vanguard etc). Instead you only just state your build. You should also include alternative builds so you are less predictable. Also the hooks in the screenies seem pretty basic, I mean anyone could get those hooks. Overall the guide doesnt delve too much into certain sections (specifically the counters for pudge, foresight is the best counter against him, such as wards, watchers etc ) This gets a 7/10 from me.

The whole strategy is gr8..i mean the arcane is...100% pure magic...and if u follow it by hood which gives u 8 hit point reg per sec and 30% magic resistance..u can spam hook and root as many times as u like, after hood u can either make hot or radiance because u should have maxed out ur other skill that gives u 16& magic resistance and u don't necesarily need the 11 hit point reg from hot..depennds what kinda heroes ur facing, if high HP( centaur..etc) get radiance if agi or int-> radiance...btw 10/10 guide, gr8 job man!

coz in bots of travel and arcane ring...its a sure ball for pudge to own his food(ints and agi heroes)
with BoT and arcane you have the speed and +rot too slow em....and there are lots of players who knows how to outsmart pudge like using dagger of escape and crisscrossing paths....BoT in earlygame helps to me alot when i use pudge..then b4 i go to the usual build of pudge...nice strat btw...two thumbs up...:)

Suggestion~~~ Suggestion~~~ First of all pudge have problem killing tougher heros such as SK etc etc... if you can get a dagon early u can really dominate em, hook bite hold shift and click dagon on him while biting. The dagon will go off right after bite finishes and he can not stun you b4 dagon goes off XD 1550 damage by the time of level 6 if you can get a dagon by den and thats wif rot on level 2.

Another funny thing you can do is if you have an enchantress on ya team, hook the guy in the opposite direction as she throw her spear XD watch her do a one hit kill lol.

Pudge wif lothars... dun need comments... suddenly appear next to you and FREASH MEAT ~~~ RUN RUN RUN~~~ chase chase chase~~ hook~~ dead X_X

Good guide...you play pudge the same way I do. Sometimes I elect to go for flask instead of mana ring depending on the heroes im against. Plus it allows me to hold on2 haste for when i need it most.

Hood of Defiance can be important you know!! When you cast rot, you just damage yourself just a little damage so kindly include Hood of Defiance!! And your great!

what? No synergy with bloodseeker? Those two make the best ganks in the game, and pudge, in more than one way, benefits immensely from having the enemy stand still (hook AND rot Work best this way) Rupture + hook will kill anthing

with 2x basher , butterfly, Treads, defiance, vladmir's offering plus magina's mana break and spell shield...

rot is only skill that pudge can use,
and rot alone, cannot kill magina w/ that item build...

Really, any stunner has amazing synergy with Pudge, especially vengeful spirit.

The whole guide is great exept for the arcane ring. IMO, you won't need a whole lot of mana if you rarely miss. at early game perseverance and two(2) bracers would be enough. It is also important not to be stunned while dismembering an enemy hero or while following an enemy hero with rot so I prefer BKB and linken sphere, the excess mana from linken will suffice for a dagon mana consumption. Having dagon will make you an instant killing machine, being immune to spells would make you invulnerable to ganking and other skills, giving you time to escape or use town portal.
Overall it is a great guide. 9/10

I recommend playing wtf mode so you can practice, i did that, now i can fogofwar hook. I always have this good feeling when you blind hook!

Rot doesn't consume mana, it only eats away your hp, so that means you only use 240 mana per set of skills. and 240 is all you need for the kill. Except if you're using dagon.

@HoD users: the problem with HoD is that you have to get it BEFORE Flesh Heap, which is hard to do(XD). Else, it wouldn't stack properly. But if you are great at last hitting( not like me XD) you should get it w/o neglecting Boots and Bottle/arcane. It's not wise to leave out flesh heap for stats IMO.

@guide:GREAT guide on hooking, Pudge is prolly the best hero in DotA(at least the best tank:P). detailed on hooking but you could just add more on rotting high hp enemy(in case there are no more enemies to hook).

I play pudge for my clan (sev) as a tank/support. I get meka, never bottle or arcane. some people might argue that your mana pool is too low for meka, but think about it. if someone like potm was about to stop ur push with just a starfall, all you needed to do was meka, and your push would be right up again. Also, hooking is not the main focus for pudge. farming is the main focus. If you only focus on hero kills early game, which your not going to get many of seeing as how most teammates in pubs ks. besides, if you get the kill, so what? do you get the str? no, and thats why you should get to level 15 quickly so that you will have flesh heap maxed, and can take full advantage of killing heroes. Pudge should be a lane-stayer and neutral creeper(the kobolds give massive str bonuses), i prefer bottom lane. but thats just my opinion, and your guide is still new to pudge friendly.

There is also another thing you did not mention. Pudge, if played properly, is both early game domination, mid game ownage, and late game unkillable. you should never get items that help YOU get solo kills, but get items that benefit your whole team. Imagine a pudge at level 25 with 3-4 k life with dagon, linkens, blade mail and the like. what use is 3-4k health? even ursa bear can get that. But imagine a pudge with 7k life at level 25. Unkillable without mass slow/disable.

Why Immediately not buying Linken Instead of Arcane ring
Linken blocks negative skills and this works like 50% guinsoo and heart
6hp regen /150% mana regen
15 all stats
15 damage coz ur base is Str
a little in armor because of the 15 agi
mana regeneration and + mana coz of int

and make sure to buy defiance 1st than any other items coz you will not be going home anymore coz of 8 hp regen per second and a magic defence of 30%

i think one of the best allies is leshrac, because of his ulti. Also without dismember you just have to follow and wait till he dies.

you forgot about last word on silencer... its a perfect counter for ANY combo'ing hero. if you try to hook, and last word arua is in range... ur screwed - no dismember or rot for 5 seconds. or if you hook and dont get last worded, dismember and ur still screwed for 5 seconds , u cant activate rot. or hook without last word, activate rot first, you cant dismember.. and silencer gets away... silencer is an imba hero with that last word aaura... silencer + magina is the perfect combo for countering ANY combination.

i read this great guide and i played dota on ai version and tested it out no cheating 5v5 pudge is great i think i might make him my main instead of bloosseeker.

Yes , there IS a very good hero to counter Pudge , Bloodseeker , if he uses BloodRage on pudge while he is Rotting , he takes 15 seconds of silence wich will almost surely kill the pudge , as so it will cancel dismeber if used prperly.

Afer u hook and start dismember , if u get a BloodRage u dismeber will end and if u did start to rot m, u will rot + 15 secs , and , with bloodthirsty he can easily run from u , as u WILL be at -40% HP as u rot.

hey man, AMAZING strat(i think i commented before, but still........) but i have ONE question, does satanic or MoM life-steal work on pudge's rot damage?cuz then it would make pudge invulnerable to his own rot. Also, along with a HoD and HoT, satanic life-steal would probably give him a positive hp-regen even with rot on.

also, one thing i really find useful is tht pudge can really push the lane well in late-mid-game and in late-game when u can spam rot because of ur items. also, items tht give -armou auras are also good for his rot, as it makes the opponent all the more vulnerable to rot........

good strategy.....but as you said the silence can be deadly if used right...
the drow can pretty much own u and get away if its a pro using her....after the hook and dismember..shes still barely alive..so i thin i can get the kill, so i start rotting and chasing.. every few seconds she truns around and cold arrows me, then as my rot is still going i get silenced...i turn into the prey and then i get cold arrowed to death as a try to run FROM THE DROW....sasd sad sad..
